Psalms 82:6

The Hebrew adjective עליוֹן (ʿelyōn) is derived from the root ʿ-ל-ה / ʿ-ל-י, meaning "to go up" or "to ascend." It conveys the sense of "upper," "highest," or "most exalted." In biblical and post-biblical usage, ʿelyōn frequently denotes supremacy, preeminence, or exalted status—not merely spatial height but also rank, authority, or ontological superiority. This is evident in titles such as אל עליוֹן (ʾēl ʿelyōn, "God Most High") in Genesis 14:18–20, where the term connotes divine sovereignty and ultimate authority. Here, there is no definite article, nor אל for "god" thus the rendering "the Most High" is incorrect.
